Handykrafts Indonesia
a
'hands-on' effort in the village
We
at Handykrafts, SNT's non-profit handicrafts unit, are committed
to promoting high quality local Indonesian arts and crafts made
in small home industries. These products display the
traditional skills and techniques of craft working communities
in West Java. Ensuring that craftspeople earn a fair living for
their skills means that important traditions and income-earning
opportunities are sustained, giving them tangible hope for the
future.
As
well as helping local artisans, Handykrafts is able to generate
revenue for SNT’s other units; in fact, this unit is the single largest
internal contributor to SNT's total operational costs. Thus, in a very
real way, the efforts of these artisans in the villages, go
towards helping the poor - in areas of agriculture, education and
health.
· Handykrafts began operations in 2000 and
employs a staff of four.
· We focus on handicrafts that are distinctive to
Tasikmalaya – currently in three specific areas batik, and the
woven materials mendong and pandan.
· Over the past 12 months, Handykrafts has
achieved sales totaling Rp. 73,000,000 (approx. US$7,900), with
profit reaching Rp. 40,000,000 (US$4,300).
· As our profits increase this will fund an
increasing proportion of the work carried out within our other
units.

Your purchase can make a difference for Indonesians who are
still experiencing the long term effects of the recent Asian
economic crisis. The profit from each item sold goes directly
into helping
the poor through community development projects, aimed at
funding appropriate technology, community health and
micro-credit projects.
