The Madurese

The
Madurese originate from the island of Madura – 5 km across the
Maduran strait from Indonesia’s second largest city,
Surabaya. There are about 3 million Madurese on the island of
Madura. Another 3 million or so live in metropolitan Surabaya
and the remaining 10 million are scattered across East Java, from
Surabaya to Java’s Eastern tip. There are an undetermined
number of Madurese working as expatriate workers, primarily in
Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Middle East.

One of the distinguishing marks of
the Madurese is their
resiliency and preference for migrating round the world in search
of employment. This allows them to work for themselves or at
various jobs
doing piece-meal work. These people are fiercely committed to Islam and
they defend their honour zealously.
Bull racing is a sport found
uniquely amongst the Madurese, and special breeds of bulls are
raised solely for this purpose.
These animals are fed a diet of grain, eggs, chili peppers, beer and many
other exotic ingredients, making them high strung but sleek-looking,
well fit for the race. The jockey rides a wheel-less travois
system while goading the bulls in places where it is sure to
aggravate them. The sport is dangerous and it is not uncommon
for jockeys and/or spectators to be injured.
