Welcome to SNM
helping
internally displaced
madurese
rebuild &
empowering disadvantaged locals
We have assisted the Sambas IDPs since they first started
arriving on Madura in April 1999. Out of that relief effort grew
the Community Development Foundation Sumbangsih Nuansa Madura
(meaning 'A Madurese Nuanced
Contribution'). The foundation was officially established in June 2003.
Our office is in the regency capital of Bangkalan, though we do
much of our work in the district of Sepuluh – about 45 km
northeast of Bangkalan.

Sambas
Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Story
In
March and April of 1999, over 100,000
Madurese who lived in Sambas,
West Kalimantan were brutally displaced, with many fleeing to Madura
-
the land of their ancestors - in search of safety.

Our
Story Intersects the Sambas Story
Meeting IDPs at the dock in Surabaya every 2 weeks in 1999 when
their ship (the Bukit Raya) arrived, we soon became involved in
assisting them with
medical care,
clean water needs
and
in their quest for sustainable
livelihoods.

From
Relief to Development
In 2003 Sumbangsih Nuansa Madura was formed, as an attempt to address the problems of the IDPs in a more
holistic and long-term manner. In 2004 an office was leased in the
regency capital of Bangkalan. It must be said that emergency relief is
significantly different in nature to long-term empowerment.
Realising this, we
joined ranks with Yayasan Perisai Biru and set our sights
upon empowering not only IDPs, but also disadvantaged locals
wishing to
make a better life for themselves.
Our dream
is to see thriving communities of well-being across the
regency of Bangkalan.
