Pandan
Village of
Many Talents
The smooth texture and durability of Pandan leaves makes them suitable for plaiting.
The mature leaves are cut and dried, before being woven together. A
waterproof coating or colourful painting can be applied for
additional protection or to enhance the look. In addition plaited pandan can easily be combined with other materials such as wood,
bamboo or even metals to give unique and sophisticated look.
Pandan handicraft business has become hereditary business for years.

Because of increasing demand, the availability of raw materials in
Tasikmalaya is not sufficient anymore, s handicraftsmen must acquire
raw materials from outside Tasikmalaya such as Pangandaran, Ciamis
Regency (West Java Province) and Gombong, Kebumen Regency (Central
Java Province). Seeing such condition, it is widely open the
opportunity to make use of less productive land for developing
pandan plant.

The Pandan handicraft business has skilled and experienced human
resources support, but most of pandan plait handicraftsmen are
farmers who will postpone their handicraft works when rice planting
and cropping season comes. In these times there are stagnant
productions and will interrupt the continuity of entire productions.
